Default New to rangers...

Well my friend played a ranger till lvl 10 as a break from wow and i wasnt playing then, so now he left back to wow and left me with his ranger, i got him to lvl 15 and becomming interested about rangers. I played warrior as my first character, and basically beat factions, but i was limited to farming and stuff cuz i had no prophecies skills, anyways my questions about rangers are:
1. Can i play a stable ranger with factions only skills?
2. For attributes should i always have high expertise, such as the main att for warriors (swordmanship/axe/hammer 14)?
3. I dont see any effect on the energy of expertise when i mouse over a skill, is it suppose to show?
4. What are the basic and most recommended skills to equip? (like bleeding/gash for some warrior), i know apply poison is a pretty popular one
5. Do rangers farm with traps all the time or?
6. Can a ranger with faction only skills farm sumthing basic?
7. Can rangers go 1v1 in pvp and win? i always see rangers as a sub <.<
8. What good elites can i cap in factions at sum early stages?

1) The most popular ranger skills are core. That means they're available in all three campaigns, including Factions.
2) I usually run 13 Expertise. It depends on your skillbar, really, but I can't endorse having less than 9 in any case. Read this for further info.
3) No, the reduced energy cost is not visible in the skill description.
4) Interruption is a trademark of rangers. You mentioned Apply Poison; condition stacking is also popular.
5) I don't really do much ranger farming anymore, but when I did it was mostly trapping. Rangers do not have many other forms of AoE damage.
6) I don't remember ever farming in Cantha. Maybe someone else can help you out here.
7) Um...to be honest, I don't understand the fascination some people have with 1v1. What I can tell you is that when I feel like spending time in AB, I easily lock down eles, necros, rits, and usually warriors too. Other professions require much more effort.
8) Broad Head Arrow, Enraged Lunge, Equinox, and Spike Trap are the earliest elites in Factions. BHA is great; the others are situational. Don't despair, because you'll get all fifteen soon enough.

rangers are awesome...nice choice...been playing my ranger for 14months with canthan vanquisher and tyria guardian with him ^^

IMO the best elite for rangers comes from Factions [skill]broad head arrow[/skill]

great skill..you can really run a good bar with factions only skills...rangers don't use traps always for farming..they are incredibly versatile...I have run scythe rangers, axe rangers, spear thrower rangers, caster ranger...all work just because rangers are so versatile. and have expertise! r12 is enough in my opinion for rangers!

any questions bout playin a good ranger just PM me ingame

interrupting effectively takes a lot of practice

probably one of the things to keep in mind (especially for PvP in general) is that many people use skills in a certain order (like assassin skill chains) and there is a cadence to the skill/spell use that you can get used to

you can use some educated guesswork to use your interrupts before your opponents start casting; sometimes it doesn't pay off, but usually in less competitive PvP (AB and RA) people have very predictable play styles

Nearly all skills and spells have a specified cast time for their activation. The shorter it is, the harder it is to interrupt. To put it in perspective, you have a full five seconds to react to a spirit being summoned or a Meteor Shower being cast... you have to be asleep not to interrupt that. A 1/4-second casting Protective Spirit on the other hand, is almost impossible to interrupt intentionally (until you're really, really good at anticipation, that is). Basically anything that takes 2 seconds and higher to cast, you really shouldn't have any trouble with. Anything faster is going to take practice for you to get good at. Fortunately interrupting is definitely a game mechanic that rewards and benefits from real, raw player skill... so you'll get better at it.

Probably, though having more campaigns will help of course. [skill=text]Needling Shot[/skill] and [skill=text]Broad Head Arrow[/skill] are two great Factions Ranger skills.

Personally I run 14 Expertise a lot, especially in PvP, because it is a breakpoint where 10 energy skills only cost 4. You can easily use less, however, in most PvE builds.

It doesn't show up like that. Try firing a 10-energy bow attack with 14 Expertise though... only 4 energy will actually be taken.

For PvP, Burning Arrow and Crippling Shot are both staple elites, backed up by Apply Poison and probably Hunter's Shot, Sloth Hunter Shot, or Screaming Shot for bleeding. Generally, I always make sure I have my interrupts, a blocking stance, and Troll Unguent.

Sure, but it depends on the builds involved. However, 1v1 is kinda silly in Guild Wars. The game is absolutely not balanced for it and it means nothing that someone can set up specifically to beat someone else. Its not a test of skill, its an exercise in e-peen waving.

Someone already said it, but visualization helps. Upward yellow arrow = Enchanted.

While we're on the topic, a downward gray arrow is a Condition, a downward purple arrow is a hex.
